A song by Clark

Dernière mise à jour : 5 avr. 2023

Hello dear readers, I hope you are all doing very well. Since my last post on Cassiopea’s Metinar, Zazie and Laura have introduced you to other people and cultural elements of the Atlana society. If you missed them, feel free to check them out.

Today, I continue to tell you about Clark. You can read his presentation here, if you no longer remember him. We collected a large number of scores and lyrics attributed to Clark, written in old french. If we count within our manuscripts a set of 30 compositions, we think that Clark had many more creations. Indeed, according to his testimony, he sometimes did not write down what he created on paper. There was a wide oral culture, which meant that Clark’s songs were transmitted mostly by voice :

I think I had a great season this time. You can imagine, I won three gold medals, which means a lot of dinners ! I still have to think about this winter. I’m preparing some fixed compositions, which could stand the test of time. These really should be qualitative… So no more drinking songs but love songs ! Everyone seems to remember love or break-up song, I don’t really know why. (letter 45, Clark)

As for Clark’s themes, we know that he wrote mostly about love stories, because he knew that he wrote mostly about love stories, because he was sure that his songs would be more popular. However, it seems that he was more found of humorous and warrior songs :

I’m so bored. You should know, dear readers, that I measure the value of a song by the intensity of the applause and the filling of my plate by the tavern that welcomes me. And tonight, guess what I get ! An apple. A little red apple. I know that my voice has been affected by my cold and that humorous songs don’t really please, but still ! I like to sing this way… (letter 47, Clark)

Now that we know all this, I suggest you take a look at a specific Clark song. This one is called "Ivesis and the Fisherman". Clark tells how the goddess forged a bond with a fisherman that the fish were fleeing. The goddess would have taught the fisherman that he was not destined to tame marine animals, but the ocean itself. That’s how the first surfer would be born. This surfer was renamed Bryan by the goddess, who gave him a strand of gold hair.

I leave you the translated lyrics of the song below :
